SpaceX Closes the Largest Startup Acquisition Ever — $60bn for Cursor

SpaceX finalized its all-stock acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor, folding the company into a new SpaceXAI division with direct access to SpaceX's Colossus supercomputer. The deal values Cursor, whose AI-assisted coding tools have become standard across software teams, at roughly $60 billion — the largest startup acquisition on record. Cursor will keep operating its existing products while SpaceX gains a deep bench of applied AI talent and infrastructure. The move signals Elon Musk's ambition to vertically integrate coding, compute and aerospace engineering under one roof, rather than depend on external AI vendors.

Why it matters: Vertical integration at this scale changes the calculus for every company still buying AI coding tools off the shelf — expect pricing and access pressure as compute and talent consolidate into fewer, larger players.

Washington Tells 35 Countries: Pick Us or Beijing, Not Both

A leaked draft letter shows the US State Department preparing to warn the 35 signatories of its "AI Opportunity Statement" that joining China's rival technology coalition will get them excluded from the American-led Pax Silica bloc, which secures supply chains for AI models, chips and critical minerals. "To be part of everything is to be part of nothing," the draft states, urging countries to "choose deliberately." About two dozen countries have already joined Pax Silica, including close US allies Japan, Australia and South Korea — several of whom, like Kazakhstan, have also signed on with Beijing's competing framework.

Why it matters: Multinationals operating across both blocs should expect forced choices on chip and model access soon — treat dual-coalition membership as a temporary state, not a stable strategy.

Meta and BlackRock's $14bn Data Centre Is Underinsured by Design

The Sopaipilla data centre campus in El Paso, Texas — a $14bn, one-gigawatt project owned by Meta and BlackRock — carries just $450 million in all-risk property cover once operational, plus $645 million against terrorism, on the advice of broker Marsh. Marsh's "probable maximum loss" estimate was based on a 1-in-250-to-500-year regional fire, implying a 3.9–7.7% chance of such an event during Meta's 20-year lease. S&P rated the project's debt A-plus — one notch below Meta's own rating — noting that if the insurance payout falls short, "Meta has to pay the gap," and that debtholders have no direct claim on the physical assets.

Why it matters: As AI data centres scale into the tens of billions, full insurance coverage is becoming financially unworkable — lenders and investors should treat "probable maximum loss" caps, not total project value, as the real exposure.

UK Quietly War-Games What Happens If Washington Cuts Off Its AI Access

The UK Cabinet Office has asked the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade to urgently assess the economic and security impact if Britons lost access to frontier AI models from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. The review follows alarm inside Britain's National Security Secretariat after President Trump's June directive forced Anthropic to briefly pull its Fable 5 model from foreign nationals worldwide. Former NCSC chief executive Ciaran Martin called the episode "reassuring" in one sense — Anthropic couldn't distinguish nationals from foreigners, so it pulled the model globally — but warned the US retains real leverage "to try and force countries to bend to its will."

Why it matters: Sovereign AI dependency is no longer theoretical — any organisation relying on a single foreign model provider should have a contingency plan for sudden access loss, not just a vendor-diversification slide in a strategy deck.

US Agencies: AI-Written Exploit Code Is Now an "Active Threat" to Water and Power Systems

NSA, CISA, the FBI, Department of Energy and EPA issued a joint advisory warning that hackers are actively using AI tools to generate exploit code against Siemens industrial controllers deployed across water treatment, energy and manufacturing facilities. The advisory follows earlier warnings this year about AI-generated malware and near-autonomous attacks on critical infrastructure, and marks one of the first times five federal agencies have jointly attributed active exploitation specifically to AI-generated code rather than human-authored exploits.

Why it matters: Operational technology teams should treat AI-assisted exploit generation as a live threat, not a future one — patch cycles built for human-paced attacks are no longer fast enough.

Deaf Users Can Now Sign Directly to Their Phone — No Typing Required

Google DeepMind's new SL2T model lets Deaf and hard-of-hearing users sign directly to their phone instead of typing, moving sign-language AI out of research labs and into everyday apps like Gboard and Live Transcribe. Trained on more than 100,000 hours of data across over 50 sign languages, the model currently supports American Sign Language to English and ships this week on the Pixel 11 — the first smartphone where a Deaf user can sign directly into any text field, from a web search to a WhatsApp message, without typing a single character.

Most people ask a question, get a generic answer, then spend three follow-ups narrowing it down. Skip the back-and-forth by stating your real limits in the first prompt.

Budget, deadline, audience and format are the four constraints that change an answer the most — include whichever apply before you ask, not after you've read a response that ignored them.
